Lake Kerkini is an artificial lake formed in 1932 on a huge wetland after the creation of a dam on the river Estrimon, in 1982 hunting was banned throughout the lake. Lake Kerkini is protected by the Ramsar Convention and is part of the European “Natura 2000” network. The area is home to numerous animal species such as the golden jackal, the wolf, the wildcat, the otter, the weasel, etc… There are 10 species of amphibians and 20 species of reptiles. The diversity of fish is very rich, as there are 30 different species of fish, including eels. Around 300 species of birds have been recorded in the areas surrounding the lake, including the endangered frowning pelican and pygmy cormorant.
